In my career, I’ve seen clients (large and small) embarking on an ERP journey without sufficient clarity around the "why" behind such a major business change. CFOs and CIOs bear the responsibility of not only leading ERP initiatives but also ensuring that the program supports and enables strategic objectives while creating tangible business value.

Define Your Why and When

Before diving into an ERP project, take time to define the business rationale and value proposition that validate your vision. In addition, don’t underestimate the value of time—not just in terms of when to start and plan your go-live, but also how to design and build for future scale.

Look Beyond Process Efficiency

This goes beyond process change, efficiencies and relieving pain points. Aligning your ERP strategy to the future organizational structure is crucial. Are you:
- Planning for growth or acquisitions?
- Getting IPO-ready for 2025?
- Preparing to be acquired?
Each of these paths requires a different ERP strategy, and perhaps a different timeline.

Strategic Alignment is Key

ERP implementation is a significant undertaking that requires holistic planning, cross-functional collaboration, and unwavering commitment. Without a clear ‘why’ and ‘when’, companies risk building a platform on the quicksand of uncertainty where even the most robust systems will falter.

Final Thought

Prioritize clarity, vision, timing, and purpose in your ERP endeavors. It's not about adopting new technology; it's a test of your business stewardship and ability to drive strategic value and growth in your company.
